Scam! A vigilant lady at the post office saved me $4,000
Felix Molski
My mother received a phone call in Polish from (someone we now know was an impersonator) a nephew describing a life or death emergency of needing $4,000 for an immediate lung operation in London. The impersonator was very convincing because he knew a lot of personal information such as sicknesses in the family in Belgium. My mother was able to convince me that the person was genuine and to go to Western Union and send them the money.

Pisalismy: Strzeżcie się oszustów telefonicznych

When I got to the post office, the lady over the counter had recently served a Polish lady who had an almost identical phone call. That person also knew personal family details and she sent them $4000 for the supposed emergency but later discovered it was a fraud. She was unable to recover her money.

Apparently there is quite a bit of this going on. I was lucky in the lady in the post office was vigilant and let me know of her experience. I did not have time to check, because it was around 4:15 pm so I had to act immediately if the money was to be sent in time.

Perhaps you could give a warning in Polish to Puls readers about this scam. If anyone should receive a call from overseas from a Polish 'relative' describing an emergency situation requiring money to be sent immediately via Western Union, they are not to believe it because it probably is a scam. No matter how convincing the person may be in knowing private family details they are impersonators.
