On the occassion of the 40th Aniversary of the founding of SOLIDARITY I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes. May I applaud The Association of Our Polonia for its great initiative in organising for today a Special Holy Mass followed by a Celebratory Luncheon at the Polish Club, Bankstown, to commemorate this milestone Anniversary.
Today's event is given even greater significance by the fact that its sponsor The Association of Our Polonia, which happens also to be celebrating its 15th Anniversary as well as was founded by former Solidarity activists who, because of their patriotic fight for a free Poland unshackled from communist oppression, were forced into exile here in Australia where they were welcomed with open arms.
Solidarity, with the spiritual blessing and support of His Holiness, the late Pope John Paul II (and now a saint in heaven) achieved a landmark event in Polish and World history by bringing to an end the 45 year long communist dictatotship of Poland by means of peaceful uprising.
The peaceful uprising spread through all of communist occupied Europe and resulted in the collapse of communism in Europe for good - and with relatively little loss of life.
I vividly remember the magnificent campaign of Solidarity members in Australia organising material support for Solidarity members back in Poland, culminating in a mass rally held in Sydney Town Hall attended by thousands of supporters.
Yet again in its history the Polish nation struck a blow for freedom which had ramifications for freedom worldwide!
Poland is surely a blessed Christian Nation, inspired by Almighty God and may Solidarity for its heroism receive "eternal and everlasting blessings".

I finishing can I also note that this month of August marks the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw when the Armed Forces of Poland defeated a Soviet Army invasion of Europe thereby saving it from communist domination.
With Best Wishes today for a wonderful celebration The Honourable David Clarke
A report from the celebrations in Bankstown to be published soon. |
