First Australian Chopin Piano Competition

Fryderyk Chopin has finally arrived in Australia – and Canberra of all places! Come & enjoy this sublime universal genius of the piano in the autumnal beauty of the nation’s capital ! Eight blissful days of music & other events – three rounds of competitions, master classes, a Chopin symposium, lectures on his life & death and films screenings. The 1st Australian International Chopin Piano Competition, 1-8 May 2011, ANU School of Music.

Musical events (paid admission)

1st May, Sunday, 3.00-5.00 Llewellyn Hall
Recital by Janusz Olejniczak, international Polish pianist. “Humility in the presence of Chopin does not allow me to accept one interpretation and declare that some fragment is irrevocably the best. I must constantly start from the beginning.”

3rd May, Tuesday, 9.30-4.30, Rehearsal Room 3
Nine competitors from Australia, New Zealand & Poland Australia: Peter de Jager, William Schmidt, Konrad Olszewski, Oliver She, Kathy Chow, Hank Xiang, New Zealand: Lucy Zeng. Poland: Karolina Nadolska, Gracjan Szymczak. An international jury of seven: Larry Sitsky (Chair), Emanuel Krasovsky (Israel), Professor Bodman Rae, Alan Hicks, Stephen McIntyre, Pamela Page, Arnan Wiesel (five from Australia).

5th May, Thursday, 10.00-1.30, Rehearsal Room 3
Master classes conducted by Jury members for students of the pianoforte.Free admission.

6th May, Friday, Semi-finals, Llewellyn Hall
Six competitors
1st concert 2.00-5.00
2nd concert 7.00-10.00

8th May, Sunday, Final, 1.30-4.30, Llewellyn Hall
Three competitors performing Chopin’s Concerto no.1 in E minor
With chamber accompaniment by the Goldner String Quartet
Followed by prize winners ceremony.

Conventions of performance relevant to Chopin’s music during the past 200 years
10.30-1.15 Lectures by Dr. Betros, Ms Robyn Holmes, Professor Bodman Rae
1.45-3.15 Panel discussion by Jury on the performance of Chopin’s music.

Chopin Conversations – life of Chopin
Lecture by Wanda Horky.

Two film screenings. Moonlight sonata (1937) (86 mins) featuring Ignaz Paderewski playing himself in a romantic drama Imprompt (1991) (103 mins). Story about Chopin & George Sand. Hugh Grant playing Chopin & Judy Davis playing Sand

6th May, Friday, 5.30-6.30, Band Room
Pre-tertiary event on Chopin.

7th May, Saturday, 10.00-12.30, Lecture Theatre 1
Lacrimosa dies illa – Chopin’s death & funeral
Lecture by Wanda Horky.

7th May, Saturday, 1.30-4.30, Lecture Theatre 3

Musical events at Llewellyn Hall are priced at $25/$20 discount and 1st round of competition of $10 (no discount) through Ticketek or through the School of Music Box Office one hour before on the day of the event. Season pass of $70/$60 discount available.
