Kujawy –Sydney held their annual Father’s Day Zabawa on 3rd September held at the Bankstown Polish Club. The house was full with over 150 people and overall the zabawa was a fantastic success. The night commenced as usual with a performance from Kujawy-Sydney. The evening began with older group dancing Sieradz. The vibrant colours of the costumes and the truly acrobatic feats of the boys were appreciated by the public. The precision of the steps were held in awe by all especially when they were advised that 2 of the boys had been members with the group for only 6 weeks.
This was followed by the middle group, who danced Krakowiak. The up tempo beat and beautiful costumes were enjoyed by all with. The next dance was the older group with a new version of the favourite Przepióreczka. As can be seen in the photos the group wore their lovely and vibrant Kujawski costumes (sewn by p. Maria Ejsak). The soloist had the same costume but the colours reversed and wore a lovely new headpiece which was complementary to the costume overall. The middle group then performed a dance from the southern regions of Poland known as Beskid Wschodni. It was joy to watch and ended too many applause. The biggest treat was the final dance performed by the little group who danced their hearts out to Cotton Eye Joe. The public cheered and clapped throughout the dance and louder at the end. To the surprise to all, the best was yet to come as for the finale the whole group came out to perform with the youngest members of all.
All the Fathers were then called to the centre of the dance floor for something extraordinary and special; members of Kujawy then handed them all a Father’s Day present. The gentlemen didn’t have to the member’s fathers but anyone who was a father.
The MC for the evening was Marek Wojnicz. The president Jolanta Żurawski welcomed and thanked all who had come to the zabawa and wished all Fathers a Happy Father’s Day. Music was by Szczepan Sułkowski who played beautifully all evening with a modern repertoire. All smallgoods for the evening were donated by Narel Smallgoods and lottery prizes supplied by Dr K Lukaszewicz.
The next major event Kujawy performed at was the renowned Eurofest. Kujawy-Sydney has performed for this Festival of many Cultures for over the last 10 years. The weather was absolutely perfect with sunshine and not too hot. The Festival commenced with a Parade of Nations of which Kujawy partook as they do every year dressed in national costume. The official speeches made by Member of Parliament etc and the festivities began. Kujawy performed three dances. Firstly the older group danced Żywiec Mieszczańki followed by Beskid Wschodni by the middle group and ending with the older group dancing Sieradz.
The performance was greeted with load applause and cheering as Kujawy-Sydney is a favourite of the Festival. Other nationalities danced to lots of applause and overall the kaleidoscope of colourful costumes on the day, made it an exciting and vibrant day appreciated by all who were present on the day.
