This exhibition is under the Honorary Patronage of H.E. Andrzej Jaroszyñski Ambassador of the Republic of Poland. And it is supported by the Polish Consulate General in Sydney.Curators: S³awomir Toman & Piotr Korol.

The Institute of Fine Arts (ISP) at the Arts Faculty of UMCS in Lublin already possesses an established place on the map of Polish education of arts. Within the Painting, Graphic Design and Art Education faculties students have the possibility of familiarising themselves with all forms of artistic expression, spanning styles from classic to the modern.

Most of the ISP academic staff are active artists involved in a variety of artistic techniques and mediums. Showing all approaches within one single exhibition in a country as geographically distant from Poland as Australia would be extremely difficult, therefore we’re implementing a certain formal condensed selection in the choice of artists and works for the exhibition.

In the Polish language there exist common sayings: “paper will accept anything” or “paper has patience”. They indicate the neutrality of paper as a carrier of information or artistic content. However paper itself can be used as a creative medium (paper art), both in the literal and metaphoric sense (the recycling of meanings). Those two aspects of paper are the exhibition’s topic and a common denominator linking the presented works.

A host of work from some of Poland’s leading artists will be showcased in Brisbane this month as part of a global collaboration in art. Held at the Queensland College of Art (QCA) Griffith University, the exhibit will display fine art, painting and photography from 21 artists of the Marie Curie Sklodowska University in Lublin.

The exhibition, Patience of Paper, is a reference to a common Polish saying that ‘paper will accept anything’ indicating the neutrality of paper as a carrier of information or artistic content. The show is another step in a reciprocal arrangement, which sees the QCA currently conducting a staff exhibition tour of five cities throughout Poland. QCA Deputy Director Earle Bridger says the mutual exhibitions are an opportunity to gain insight into the differing cultural visions between Central Europe and Australia.

“Exchanging art between Australian and Poland is cultivating artistic collaboration and the development of important networks between individuals, institutions and communities regardless of geographical, linguistic and political boundaries,” he said. “This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for the Brisbane community to view the work of renowned European artists in a local setting.”

Artists featured in the show include the award-winning Artur Popek, art director of the Society for Arts in Chicago and graphic illustrator for the New Daily in New York; Grzegorz Mazurek, who has won 10 international awards and exhibited in more than 400 shows; and Tomasz Zawadzki, whose works are included in collections throughout Germany and Poland.
