Whilst in Poznan I received help from Wojciech Owsianowski who, from the Polish side of things, was instrumental in bringing to fruition Poland’s bicentennial gift to Australia, the Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki statue and pedestal that is now part of the monument at Jindabyne. Wojciech is currently a PTTK przewodnik in Poznan. He is passionate about the city and Strzelecki. Poznan has a rich history and many interesting monuments including one that honours Rejewski, Zygalski and Rozycki, the three Polish mathematicians that broke Enigma in the early 1930’s. Unfortunately when we visited the sculpture it was enclosed by timber due to renovations in that part of Poznan Castle.
Owsianowski was delighted by the warmth shown to Poland by the Irish visitors who came for Euro 2012. Wojciech thought that the "Kosciuszko Heritage Inc." booklet about Sir Paul’s humanitarian deeds in Ireland may be useful in strengthening the Polish/Irish relationship in Poznan, so he organised a meeting for me with Andrzej Sobon, the Deputy Head of the Poznan Mayor’s Cabinet. For about an hour I was able to give a good account of Sir Paul’s humanitarianism in Ireland when he helped over 200 000 Irish children avoid starvation at the time of the Great Hunger. Sadly, Wojciech Owsianowski informed me that the Mayor’s Office has decided not to go ahead with use of the booklet, but instead is currently working on commemorating Strzelecki in Ireland by placing a monument of some kind at the house Strzelecki lived in whilst in Dublin.
Anna Liebert, the Director of Szkola Podstawowa nr 53 im. Pawla Edmunda Strzeleckiego, has a great enthusiasm for her school and its patron. She took pride in showing me around the school pointing out the display cases which house artefacts and materials about Strzelecki. Australian references and exhibits feature prominently in this display. I presented a copy of The Best of Human Nature to Anna and received a copy of the school's 50th anniversary of its naming in return.
I felt priveleged to interview Anna and record her eloquent account of SPES and how the school honours and educates its students about their patron. In my broken Polish I was able to evince expansive answers to the following questions:

Moje drogie Siostry i Bracia. Jest to dla mnie wielki zaszczyt, jako Prowincjała Towarzystwa Chrystusowców, być tutaj z wami dzisiaj. Witam was ciepło, każdego z osobna i wszystkich razem, a w szczególności waszego duchowego opiekuna, księdza Wally [Stefańskiego]. Jestem bardzo szczęśliwy, że mogę zobaczyć was wszystkich tutaj, zgromadzonych, jako wspólnota i chciałbym móc przemówić do każdego z was personalnie. Niestety, czas na to nie pozwala. Jednakże jestem wdzięczny za możliwość bycia dzisiaj tutaj z wami, gdzie mogę modlić się z wami i co najważniejsze odprawić mszę św. w waszej intencji. Najcudowniejsza jest nasza wspólna obecność tutaj i modlitwa do Pana — Stwórcy i ofiara nas samych Jemu w Jego Eucharystycznej Ofierze. Na pewno jest to najlepsze z możliwych miejsc do spotkania — miejsce poświęcone naszej wspólnej modlitwie, jako społeczności.
Jesteśmy bardzo specjalną i ważną społecznością, do której Bóg przemówił z miłością w dzisiejszej liturgii. Czy pamiętacie co On powiedział? To jest naprawdę warte naszego dokładnego wysłuchania i uwagi — to jest rzeczywiście bardzo cenne i wartościowe — prawdziwa gwarancja życia w spokoju i szczęściu. W dzisiejszej Ewangelii Bóg mówi do nas. Czy jest to możliwe dla nas, ludzi, żyć tym życiem miłości?
Tak, z pewnością jest. Mamy wiele przykładów z przeszłości, i również obecnie, które pokazują nam, że jest to możliwe. Weźmy na przykład Mahatmę Ghandi — jego walka o wolność, o jego ludzi, była silnie oparta nie na przemocy i nienawiści, ale wyłącznie na miłości. Matka Teresa z Kalkuty przez całe życie chciała dla samej siebie bardzo mało, ale wstydliwie błagała dla niedotykalnych biednych, których znajdowała na ulicach Indii. Nasz wielki odkrywca, Paweł Edmund Strzelecki, którego pamięć czcimy dzisiaj, pokazywał swoją wielką miłość cierpiącym, zdeprawowanym ludziom — kiedy wysyłał jedzenie do umierających Irlandczyków w połowie XIX wieku. Wy sami moglibyście podać o wiele więcej przykładów ludzi, którzy postępowali z miłością.
Moi drodzy przyjaciele, jak oglądamy TV i czytamy gazety i magazyny, możemy obserwować walkę komunistów o dominację nad krajami. Niektóre walki naznaczone są rozlewem krwi i przemocą, inne mają wymiar pokojowy. Na pewno, jesteśmy dumni mówiąc, że nasza Ojczyzna, Polska, zawsze walczyła z komunizmem w pokojowym wymiarze — poprzez ciągłe spotkania i dyskusje przy stole. Bóg zwraca się do nas bardzo jasno. On objawia nam, że najwspanialszą prawdą naszego życia — jest miłość. Jesteśmy i stajemy się ludźmi Boga miłości i miłości samodzielnej.
Możecie zapytać, kto to jest Chrześcijanin? Chrześcijanin to nie ten który jedynie uczęszcza regularnie na nabożeństwa do kościoła, to nie ten który nosi pobożne dewocjonalia lub symbole lub ma je w domu lub innym miejscu, to nie ten który pracuje bardzo ciężko dla swojej rodziny, nie ten który zapewnia edukację dla swoich dzieci, albo jest podziwiany i szanowany przez swoich ludzi — Nie! Chrześcijanin szczerze dąży do życia przykazaniami miłości Jezusa. Jezus w dzisiejszej Ewangelii tłumaczy nam, co oznacza życie miłością. On powiedział: Nauczyliście się, że zostało powiedziane: musisz kochać bliźniego swego i nienawidzić swojego wroga. Ale ja wam mówię : kochaj swoich wrogów i módl się za tych, którzy cię prześladują; podążając tą drogą staniecie się synami Boga w niebie'. Współczesny świat żyje i będzie żył w stałym strachu, terrorze, niepewności, napięciu, fermencie, jeśli nie zacznie dążyć do życia Jezusowym
przykazaniem miłości — `kochaj bliźniego swego, jak siebie samego'. Wszystkie narody, rodziny i organizacje nie osiągną swoich celów, będą w kryzysie, ewentualnie się rozpadną, jeśli będą nieustannie ignorować boskie prawo miłości. Każdy z nas osobiście, Ty i ja, może tylko odnaleźć znaczenie spokoju i szczęścia przez życie życiem opartym na boskim przykazaniu miłości. Każdy z nas personalnie — ty i ja, może odnaleźć cel życia, spokój i szczęście przez życie życiem opartym na boskim przykazaniu miłości. Musimy postanowić, tu i teraz, że akceptujemy ten sposób życia.
Obecnie, jesteśmy wszyscy świadomi, że sytuacja ekonomiczna w Polsce jest kryzysowa — w wielu przypadkach odkrywanie podstaw życia jest niedostępne — ale najcudowniejsze jest to, że Polacy stawiają czoła temu kryzysowi z cierpliwością i spokojem oraz z wiarą w boską miłość wypatrują poprawy sytuacji — nie ma jakichkolwiek gwałtownych reakcji przemocy. Dla naszych ludzi, droga pokoju — droga Jezusa — jest drogą wolności — przyszłością każdego z osobna i wszystkich razem. Możemy bardzo wyraźnie zauważyć, że kraje budujące swoją przyszłość na rewolucjach i wojnach, spotykają tylko katastrofy. Kraje budujące przyszłość w oparciu o miłość Jezusa, mają zagwarantowaną przyszłość w pokoju i trwającym nieustannie szczęściu.

Zebraliśmy się tutaj dzisiaj, po pierwsze, ponieważ jest to dzień kiedy publicznie wyznajemy wiarę w Boga, po drugie, aby czcić 150 rocznicę odkrycia Góry Kościuszki przez polskiego odkrywcę Pawła Edmunda Strzeleckiego. Zebrało się tutaj wiele różnych kultur, każda ze swoją bogatą tradycją, językami i zwyczajami. Nasze święto zostało wzbogacone przez tę wielką różnorodność. Teraz, pozwólcie nam, każdemu z osobna i wszystkim wspólnie, pokazać wspólnie w tej Eucharystii naszą chwałę i podziękowania Bogu, za Jego wielką miłość i modlić się do niego, każdy z nas, obecny tutaj dziś, będzie wzmocniony do odczytywania i życia Jezusowym wspaniałym przykazaniem miłości.

Homily by Fr. Stanislaw Wrona, delivered at the Strzelecki Festival, February 18th 1990
MY DEAR SISTERS AND BROTHERS, It is my great privilege as Provincial of the Society of Christ to be here with you today. I warmly greet you, one and all, and especially your spiritual leader, Fr. Wally. I am so happy to see you all here gathered as a community and would so much love to speak to each one of you personally. Unfortunately, time does not permit this. However, I am grateful for the opportunity of being present here with you where I can pray with you, and, above all, offer with you the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. What could be more wonderful than our presence here together as we worship the Lord of all creation and offer ourselves to Him in His Eucharistic Sacrifice. It surely is the best of all meeting places - the sacred place of our common worship as a community.
We are a very special and important community to whom God ha lovingly spoken, in today's liturgy. Can you remember what He said!! It is really worth our careful listening and attentiveness - it is indeed very precious and valuable - a sure guarantee of a life of peace and happiness.
In today's Gospel God speaks to us very clearly. He reveals to us that the greatest truth of our life - is love. We are, and become, people of God by love and by love alone.
You may ask, who is a Christian? A Christian is not one who merely attends church services regularly, one who wears pious objects or symbols or has these in his home or elsewhere, or one who works very hard for his family, or one who provides education for his children, or one who is admired and respected by his fellow men - No! The Christian is one who sincerely endeavours to live Jesus' commandment of love. Jesus in today's Gospel explains to us what is meant by living in love. He said: "You have learnt it was said: you must love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say this to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you: this way you will be sons of your Father in heaven". Our world today lives, and will live in constant fear, terror, uncertainty, tension, upheaval, and unrest, unless it responds to, and endeavours to live out, Jesus' commandment of love - "love your neighbour as yourself". Whole nations, families and organisations will fail to achieve their purpose - will find themselves in crises - will eventually crumble, if they persist in ignoring God's law of love. Each of us personally, you and I, can only find meaning and peace and happiness by living a life based on God's commandment of love. We must resolve, here and now, to live out this way of life.
Is it possible to us, human beings, to live this life of love? Yes, it certainly is. We have many examples from the past, and in the present, to show us that this is possible. Take for example Mahatma Ghandi - his struggle for justice, for his people, was strongly based not on violence and hatred but solely on love. ' Mother Teresa of Calcutta goes through fife wanting very little for herself, but begging shamelessly for the poor untouchable she finds in the streets of India. Our own great explorer, Paul Edmund Strzelecki, whose memory we are honouring today, showed his. great love for a suffering, deprived people - when he sent food to starving Irish people in the mid 19th century. You yourselves could speak of many more such people who acted in love.
My dear friends, as we watch TV, and read our newspapers and magazines, we can observe the struggles of communist domi nated countries. Some struggles are marked by blood and violence, others by peaceful means. Surely, we are proud to say, that our homeland, Poland, always struggled and fought communism by peaceful means - by constant meetings and discussion around the table. Thanks be to God, after years and years of "peaceful struggle" freedom is close at hand.
However, at present, we are all aware that the economić situation in Poland is critical - in many instances the bare essentials of life are not available - but the most wonderful this is, that our people are facing this crisis patiently and calmly and trusting God's love to better the situation - there is no violent reaction whatsoever. To our people, the way of peace - Jesus' way - is eventually the way to freedom - a future of each and all.
We can clearly see, that countries building their futures on revolution's and wars, have met with only disaster. Countries building a future on Jesus' love are guaranteed a future of freedom and lasting happiness.
My dear Sisters and Brothers, we have gathered here today firstly because it is the day when we publicly worship God, and, secondly, to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the discovery of Mt. Kosciuszko, by the Polish explorer Pawel Edmund Strzelecki. Gathered here are many and various cultures, each with their own rich tradition, languages and customs. Our Festival has indeed been enriched by such a variety. Now, let us, each and -all, show together, in this Eucharistic celebration, our praise and thanks to God for His great love, and pray to Him, that each one of us here present will be strengthened to respond to, and live out, Jesus' great commandment of love.
