Lowicz2008 | Łowicz is a vocal and dance ensemble formed in 1975 under the name “Peacock Feathers”, under the artistic direction and choreography of Mrs Krystyna Straszynski. In 1980, the ensemble changed the name of the group to its present name, “Polish Vocal-Dance Ensemble Łowicz in Melbourne” or simply, “Łowicz”. The ensemble’s main objectives are the practice and promotion of Polish folk songs and dances amongst Melbourne’s youth, and cultivating the traditions of Polish folk culture.
Mrs Krystyna Straszynski retired in 2005 at which point Mr Mirosław Kuśmider took over to lead Łowicz towards a new creative direction. Mr Mirosław Kuśmider, himself a former dancer and soloist of an Official Vocal-Dance Folklore Ensemble “Anilana” in Łódz Poland, has used his knowledge and creative vision to present several new and exciting dances to the ensemble.
Under his direction, Łowicz has performed at the annual Polish Festival at Federation Square in Melbourne, previously attended the ‘Mound and Mount Kosciuszko Festival’ in 2008 and taken part in the triennial ‘PolArt’ festival in Hobart, Adelaide and most recently in Perth. Łowicz is actively involved in promoting a multicultural Australia by performing at the recent ‘Piers Festival’ hosted by Multicultural Arts Victoria, and by performing alongside a variety of ethnic and folkloric groups during Łowicz’s annual “Łowicz and Friends” concerts.
