The Oceanic Art Society looks forward to your company next Wednesday evening, May 15th, at The Australian Museum
6.30 for refreshments prior to the meeting at 7pm.
Entry (via William Street) $15, OAS and Australian Museum members $10, Students with I.D. $5. With thanks to film maker Mr Zachary Stuart, great grandson of Bronislaw Malinowski, we have pleasure in presenting the documentary film: Savage Memory.
In 1915, Bronislaw Malinowski set out to document the ‘exotic’ practices of a
small group of islanders off the coast of Papua New Guinea. With extensive
data on sex, magic and spirits of the dead, his work set the stage for
anthropologists for decades to come and brought him fame as one of the
founding fathers of anthropology. Four generations and almost one hundred
years later, his great grandson travels to the Trobriand Islands in Papua
New Guinea and looks at the very controversial legacy Malinowski left
behind – within the field of anthropology, within his own family and among the
descendants of the people he studied.
Kindly advise your intention to attend (for catering purposes) by phone to OAS Secretary: 02 9332 3984.
You are also invited to join members of the OAS committee at supper nearby after the meeting. Bookings are required for this by email or telephone please.
