A Photographer: Barbara Dewsnap of Benalla

Farmer in poppy field.

Basia with her mum Maria.
PP: Her photographs made recently in Poland will be exhibited in Sydney at the Tap Gallery from 20 to 25th September 2005.

Polish born Barbara, immigrated to Australia at the age of four with her parents and brother and sister. With only one aunt in Melbourne, the family left Poland to start a new life. For twenty years, they were the only members of the family to come to Australia, due to strict immigration laws, but over recent years, several cousins have also chosen Australia as their new home, and a few aunts and uncles have come for a visit.

WROCŁAW OLD TOWN.

In mid 2004, Barbara returned to Poland for the first time, with her mother Maria. It was a special time, being reunited with relatives, and meeting new members of the ever expanding family. They travelled to where they lived in southern Poland, and to Ratajewicze in the east where Barbara’s late father, Henry, was born. The old farmhouse is still in the family.

Barbara’s love of animals led to a career in science, working in the veterinary field, as well as Agricultural and Medical Research. But photography is her passion, which has gone with her everywhere and has now become a way of life. After running a photographic studio in Benalla for six years, she has relocated to Wangaratta. Landscape and wildlife are Barbara’s favourite subjects to photograph, with thousands of pictures taken on countless bushwalks and expeditions. Her work has been exhibited and sold in Sydney, the Hunter Valley, King Valley and Mansfield, as well as works hanging in San Diego Zoo.
