Join acclaimed Australian author Arnold Zable in a workshop exploring family history and the art of story. Stories drawn from life, tales of journeys and family history, can be written in many ways, ranging from memoir to autobiography, from short story to novel, from personal journal to biography or tales simply written just for family. Whether fiction or non-fiction, they share in common the craft of story and tech-niques that can be applied to all genres. First comes the research, but the more cru-cial question is, what is the best way to make use of it, and how to write the story that brings history to life, and holds the reader. The workshop will include writing exercises, and will explore the most imaginative and engaging ways to write the sto-ries you have always wanted to write.

Arnold Zable – a brief bio

Arnold Zable is an acclaimed writer, educator, and one of Australia’s most loved sto-rytellers. His award-winning books include the memoirs Jewels and Ashes and The Fig Tree, and the bestselling novels Café Scheherazade, Scraps of Heaven and Sea of Many Returns. His most recent book, Violin Lessons, is a collection of stories, which takes the reader on an intimate journey into the lives of people he has met on travels over the last forty years. He is the author of numerous stories, essays and features, and several works for theatre. Zable has conducted numerous writing workshops throughout Australia and overseas, and lectured extensively on creative writing and the art of story. He is a human rights advocate, the president of International PEN, Melbourne and has a doctorate in creative arts, Melbourne University, where he is currently a Vice Chancellor’s fellow.
