Podhale’s Debutante Ball

Podhale Polish Folklore Ensemble provided a unique opportunity for young ladies to be formally presented to the Australian-Polish community in the form of a debutante ball. Podhale’s debutante ball, which occurred at Paradiso Receptions on Friday, 22nd of November, was the first in the Sydney-based Australian-Polish community in many years, making it an exciting and distinctive event for all in attendance.

The evening was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the entry of young girls into womanhood. Six girls dressed in white made their debut and were accompanied by their partners. The venue was beautifully decorated which helped created a wonderful atmosphere for the debutantes and made it a special night. The evening commenced with the entrance and introduction of each debutante individually, followed by speeches by the Guests of Honour. It was an immense pleasure to be presented an award and flowers by the guests of honour – Mrs Regina Jurkowska, Consul General of Poland and Mrs Krystyna Cyron, President of the Cabramatta Polish Association.

Following this presentation, the debutantes and their partners performed traditional ballroom dances. First, a stately Viennese Waltz, followed by an elegant Polka. Weeks of preparation went into rehearsing the routines, which were fun to perform on the night and reflected the effort we put into learning the routines. I especially enjoyed the time I got to spend with the other debutantes, as by the end of all rehearsals we had all formed a strong bond and were so excited to be making our debut together.

Other highlights of the night included a performance of the Polonez by Podhale Polish Folklore Ensemble, followed by a Polonez danced by the Debutante's and their parents and cutting of the celebratory cake. After the formalities, we enjoyed the music played by the band and DJ - it was a great opportunity to have fun and celebrate with family and friends.

Thank you, especially to Daniel and Basia Gadd, the coordinators of the event as well as the Podhale Committee and Podhale Members for your contribution in making the night a memorable and unforgettable evening and such a successful event. I am thrilled to have been a part of the Debutante Ball as it was a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Hopefully this is the first Debutante Ball of many to come!
