Australian Institute of Polish Affairs (AIPA)
and Consulate General of the Republic of Poland
cordially invite you to a discussion between
Prof. Jan Zielonka and Prof. Martin Krygier
"Is the EU Doomed?" on Saturday 17 May 2014 at 7 p.m.
at the Consulate, 10 Trelawney Street, Woollahra.
Jan Zielonka is Professor of European Politics, Oxford University and Ralf Dahrendorf Fellow at St Anthony’s College. Martin Krygier, (former President of AIPA), is Gordon Samuels Professor of Law and Social Theory, UNSW.
The discussion will explore the main arguments of Professor Zielonka’s newly published book “Is the EU Doomed?” and then reflect on their implications for Poland.
Over the past decade, the European Union has faced a series of crisis: political, economic and most recently military. Crippled by the economic problems, political brinkmanship, and institutional rigidity, the EU faces an increasingly uncertain future. Professor Zielonka argues that the European Union is probably doomed, but Europe is not.
He has published numerous works in the field of international relations, comparative politics and the history of political ideas.
Here are some of the reviews of his latest publication:
“Jan Zielonka is one of the most original and sophisticated observers of European politics. So when he expresses disillusion with both the EU and its Member States we should pay attention to where he thinks we are heading.” Christopher Hill, Sir Patrick Sheehy Professor of International relations, Cambridge University.
“A provocative and thoughtful book which comes at a critical moment for European integration.” Lionel Barber, Editor of the Financial Times.
“Zielonka offers a new and refreshing vision of Europe’s future – one that chimes perfectly with the EU’s motto: united in adversity”. Giuliano Amato, former Prime Minister of Italy.
“Jan Zielonka brilliant analysis of European disintegration is packed with the big ideas that are elegantly expressed… This is a must read book for anyone who cares about the future of Europe.” Mark Leonard, Director of the European Council on Foreign Relations.
