Lato Films is a film company that focuses on capturing pure slices of life, which are not only purposefully set against urban yet magical locations, but which also embraces all ‘characters’; from their imperfections to their quirks. We believe in diversity, originality, intuition and the magic of everyday life.. We believe in diversity, originality, intuition and the magic of everyday life.Lato Films’ first major project, “Lucy is Cold” started as a small concept which, thanks to its infectious nature, quickly spread to like-minded and film-crazed individuals. It is an ambitious project with a massive heart! “Lucy is Cold” is a slice of life, feature film, that will be shot in a record seven days. Its tone is similar to the films “Tiny Furniture” and “Frances Ha”. The film will be shot in Bondi, an iconic place ironically rarely showcased in film. It won’t be a glamorous, smooth portrayal of Bondi, but rather a slightly more down to earth Bondi painted in rich colours and nostalgia.
Lucy is a 20-something year old girl who makes a sudden decision to move in with her beloved aunt after a devastating personal drama that drove her out of her home.
Escaping the hurt of being betrayed, she leaves the life she knows and finds refuge with her aunt and family in their old house with a spectacular view of Bondi Beach. The betrayal and abandonment not only led to this change in address but more peculiarly also made her body temperature permanently cold. Extremely cold. Due to the shock or the sudden change, Lucy feels like she is never warm enough, wearing layers and layers of clothing even on the hottest days.
After moving in with her Aunt Tash, Lucy finds the loving, caring and tolerating mother figure she never had in her own mother. The warmth and understanding nature of her aunt is a sharp contrast to The Bold and The Beautiful. She tries to find her place in the Buchanan family, together with her ever-silent and stern Uncle Wayne, and her extroverted, happy-go-lucky gay cousin, Blake. Shortly after her arrival, Lucy is unpleasantly surprised by the arrival of the other new tenants in the Buchanan house. Due to financial difficulties, Wayne’s stepmother Eve and niece Clementine (Clem) ‘temporarily’ move in with the Buchanans. Not feeling particularly open to meeting new people, Lucy forms an immediate dislike for the opinionated and grouchy Eve as well as her little clone Clem.
Despite the occasional run-ins with Eve and Clem, Lucy manages to restore a kind of rhythm to her life, being stabilised by supportive and philosophical conversations with Tash and Blake. As soon as this stability seems within grasp, Vince, a neighbour and Parkour enthusiast, literally jumps into her life and mixes everything up. Full of contradictions, Vince, a “ladies man”
and OCD sufferer, becomes very interested in both Lucy and the Buchanan household. The house is now filled with a bunch of colourful characters: the seemingly cold, distant and sarcastic Lucy; the warm and loving Tash; the flamboyant and caring Blake; the silent and distant Wayne; the self obsessed and never satisfied “cougarish” Eve with her little copy Clem; and the complex Vince.
