Canberra's Senior Finalists in 2007
Tak w roku 2007 pisano o Pani Stasi: Every Friday night since 1979 Stasia Dobrowski has provided hot soup, bread, clothing, and blankets to around 300 of Canberra’s homeless and needy. Her mobile kitchen, run out of the back of a van, was possibly the first of its kind in Australia. For nearly ten years Stasia raised funds herself to buy ingredients, but in recent years she has received some government funding and businesses also help out by donating surplus food. Stasia has formally been recognised as a particularly strong example of quiet achievers who volunteer their time and often their money to feed people who are homeless, unemployed, or have drug problems. Stasia was the Canberra Citizen of the Year in 1999 and featured on the ABC’s Australian Story. In 1999 she was the inaugural ACT Senior Australian of the Year, receiving her award for her twenty-year dedication to the homeless and needy on Canberra’s streets. Her continued work in this area makes her a worthy finalist for this award again this year.
