| Polish Film Festival in Perth is pleased to announce the start of the 3rd annual film festival
organised in the capital city of Western Australia. The 2017 event will be held at Cinema
Paradiso from 25 May to 15 June 2017.
Every year Polish filmmakers amaze audiences with outstanding, beautifully shot and thought
provoking films. Polish Film Festival in Perth is proud to present for the 3rd time a celebration of
exciting Polish cinema in Western Australia and the most comprehensive line up of films to date.
The festival lineup features nine recent Polish films and marks the Australian premiere screenings
for five of them and Western Australian premiere for all of them.
The 3rd Polish Film Festival in Perth (PFFP) will open on Thursday 25 May with the screening of a
Polish-French-German coproduction, MARIE CURIE (Maria Skłodowska-Curie) by Marie Noelle,
an inspirational biography of one of the greatest scientists of all time, the legendary Maria
Skłodowska-Curie.
Maria Skłodowska-Curie spent her life setting precedents. She was the first woman to win the
Nobel Prize, the first person to win twice and the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two
different categories. She wasn’t just a pioneer in science, she was also a cultural pioneer who
challenged France’s male-dominated academic establishment and disregarded many
conventions of the times she lived in.
Highlights of this year’s program also include SPOOR (Pokot), the Silver Bear winning thriller by
renowned three-time Oscar nominated director Agnieszka Holland, and the critically acclaimed
debut by Jan P. Matuszyński, winner of numerous awards at major national and international film
festivals, THE LAST FAMILY (Ostatnia Rodzina), an unconventional film about an equally
unconventional artist, Polish surrealist painter Zdzisław Beksiński, famous for his dark post-
apocalyptic works.
Screening alongside them are two 2015 features based on true events, STRANGE HEAVEN
(Obce Niebo) and CHEMO (Chemia), as well as the romantic comedy Tips for Cheating (Porady
na Zdrady), drama WARSAW BY NIGHT (Warsaw by Night) and thriller ANATOMY OF EVIL
(Anatomia Zła).
The 2017 edition of the Festival will close with the final film by a master of world cinema and the
most prominent Polish director, Andrzej Wajda, who died in October 2016. With a career
spanning over 60 years, Wajda’s contribution to world cinema has been profound and recognised
by the Academy Awards (Honorary Oscar in 2000), European Film Awards (Lifetime
Achievement, 1990), Berlin Film Festival (Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement, 2006), and
many others. His last feature AFTERIMAGE (Powidoki) is an intimate portrayal of Władysław
Strzemiński, a renowned painter and pioneer of the avant-garde. It is a multilayered film on the
role of art and freedom of expression; a film about an artist destroyed by the system and a film on
how dangerous it is to fuse political power with a will to shape people’s consciousness.
The 2017 Polish Film Festival is presented by Nicheliving and organised under the honorary
patronage of the Consulate General of Republic of Poland in Sydney and with the support of
Polish Film Institute and many other partners and sponsors.
