Eulogy to Mirka
Adam Taras

We are gathered here today to farewell my beloved & loving mother Mirka. At this moment in the northern hemisphere family and friends in Poland are uniting with us in our prayers. Mirka was born on the 26th of February 1965. She grew up surrounded by her loving parents Leokadia and Joseph as well as her brother Roman and sister Joanna. Mirka graduated from Tadeusz Kosciuszko High School in Gorzow Wielkopolski, got her master’s degree in mathematics in Poland from Nicholas Copernicus University, Torun. While growing up, Mirka found a passion for helping others through teaching maths, English and computer science. Travelling with family and friends was her favourite way to rest during the school holidays.

Mirka moved to Australia to marry my father Mariusz in this church in 1998. Living a modest life, she found beauty in every day applying, in a Christian way, the Latin phrase Carpe Diem (seize the day). In living such a beautiful life, she loved the world. I will always fondly remember Mirka asking me after school “how was your day?”, and in doing so she passed on this vision to me. I will cherish these conversations forever. Mirka was always grateful for every day of her life. After her bone marrow transplant, she felt as if she was given a second life.

She loved God through her payers, deeds and singing songs. Wherever Mirka worked or travelled, she cherished the people she met on her way. Mirka had a great appreciation for the Polish Parish in Marayong and believed she was blessed with wonderful friendships with people of different religions from all continents. Mirka was loved and admired by doctors and nurses. Despite visiting 5 continents, and living in Australia for over 20 years, Poland had a special place in her heart. Everyone remembers her wearing that red sweater with the Polish eagle and flag. It brought her joy and peace knowing that she would return soon.

Mirka loved to be close with nature. Our family would often go for hikes to various places around Sydney to see the beauty of the world. Her fighting spirit allowed her to reach for the summits of Mt Blanc, Mt Kenya and Mt Kilimanjaro. She went on hikes with me to Mt Kosciusko, even before I was born and 5 times after.

Over 2018 for many months Mirka’s mobility was restricted due to breathing difficulties. And yet, keeping the inner struggle to herself, Mirka’s efforts to breathe can only be compared to those who summit and descend Mt Everest. In the last 8 years, her fighting spirit kept her going despite facing growing health challenges each day. Mirka’s biggest worry was becoming a burden to anyone, family, friends or the community – she stayed employed until the end, always wanting to help others learn.

Mirka taught me that family and friends are the biggest treasures in this beautiful world. She would always greet people with a smile. Her unique smile. Through these friendships she lives on, in all of us. One of her last wishes was to thank you all for your support and kindness throughout her life.

I thank God for having such a wonderful mother who lived such a beautiful life and fought to stay with us for so long. I will always love You!

Dziekuje Bogu za taka wspanialą mame, ktora zyla pienknym zyciem i tak walczyla zeby z nami trwac. Kocham Cie Mamo!
