As a concerned member of the Polish Club, Ashfield I attended the AGM meeting held at the club on 1 December 2019.I am writing this article so that the Polish Community knows some of what was discussed about the club’s huge debt.During that meeting the club’s director, Zbigniew Słomowski read out a formal statement in the English language on behalf of another director, Dr Robert Czernkowski. Dr Czernkowski apologised for comments made by him at the information meeting on 17 November to the effect that Dr Kaja Lukaszewicz was responsible for the club’s debt of 4.6M and the club’s financial ruin.
At the meeting on the 17th November the Honourable Mr R. Borsak MLC, a then candidate for the board of directors, made similar remarks. The statement read out by Mr Słomowski on behalf of Dr Czernkowski was: "During the meeting held at the Polish Club on 17 November 2019, it has been brought to my attention that I might have made comments that suggest Dr Lukaszewicz was responsible for the financial ruin of the Polish Club and, in particular, was responsible for the Polish Club’s debt of around $4.6 million. It is also suggested that I said Dr Lukaszewicz has conducted herself in a way that risks the destruction of the Polish Club.I do not remember making these allegations, or saying any words to that effect or which may carry those sentiments. However, to be clear, I withdraw any such suggestions on the basis that they are untrue and apologise to Dr Lukaszewicz if that is what she or others took my words to mean."
There is no doubt that club’s borrowings secured by a mortgage over both the club’s properties at 73 and 75 Norton Street increased from around $400k in 2013 to $4.6m in October 2018. Now, thanks to Dr Czernkowski the Polish Community knows that neither Dr Lukaszewicz nor any other plaintiffs, including myself are responsible for the club’s huge debt.
In my honest opinion the board of directors took out the loans and are responsible for the debt.
