About the book: On the Rough Waves of Life
The book was originally self published in 1995. It is an autobiography by
Mieczysław Drelich, a Carpathian Brigade veteran, and history of the Polish
soldier migrants in Australia, and their journey to Tasmania. It provides an
insight into the life, experiences and journey of a true war hero and a pioneer
of a multicultural Tasmania.
About the author:
Mieczysław (Mietek) Drelich was born in Dębina near Lublin in 1918. He joined
the Polish Army in 1937. As a member of the Carpathian Brigade, he
participated in the Battle of Tobruk, and was awarded the Virtuti Militari and the
Cross of Valour for war service following the Siege of Tobruk. He arrived in
Australia on the 'Asturias' in September 1947 and was a prominent member of the Tasmanian Polish community.
