Witold Łukasiak (1938 - 2022)

Łukasiak Witold Zbigniew, Australia, columnist, writer, former civil engineer. Born 9 February 1938 in Warsaw; son of Zygmunt and Janina (née Jaźwinska); daughter Beata; grandson Lucius. Graduated from Civil Engineering Department, Technical University of Warsaw (1967). Worked on construction sites as well as in design office. Author of the book Machines and Appliances of the Construction Site Backstage (Warsaw: MBZ, 1975), as well as author of several papers published in professional journals on the subject of introduction of new materials in building technology.

In Australia he worked for industrial and trade companies (1979-1993). Affiliated with the Polish community in Australia since the 1970s. Correspondent for Polish Weekly (Melbourne), the oldest Polish periodical in Australia and New Zealand since 1995, and correspondent for internet portal Puls Polonii (Sydney) since 2006.

Author of the monograph Polish Weekly - Sixty Years in the Service of Polish Community in Australia and New Zealand (Toruń/Melbourne: Oficyna Wydawnicza Kucharski/Kosciuszko Society Incorporated, 2010), that is dedicated to victims of Smoleńsk Tragedy of 10 April 2010. The book, rich in illustrations, consists of two parts: the first part provides a historical perspective, profiling the successive editors-in-chief and outlining their editorial work and achievements; the second part details all the activities undertaken to celebrate the jubilee of Polish Weekly.

Author of historical papers on topics mainly related to the Polish community, including several dozen papers about the famous traveller and explorer Paul Edmund Strzelecki who named the highest summit in the Australian continent - Mount Kosciuszko. In his papers, he defends this name against the recurring attempts to change it. Co-author of entries in Encyklopedia polskiej emigracji i Polonii, edited by Kazimierz Dopierała (Toruń: Oficyna Wydawnicza Kucharski, 2004). Reviewer of books by Polish community writers, interviewer of Solidarity movement activists who currently live in Australia as well as prominent members of the Polish community in Australia (in a special column created by him in Polish Weekly).

Consultant (concerning Strzelecki) for historical documentaries filmed by the Polish community in Australia. Ł. has been published in Kurier Zachodni, Perth; The Polish Museum and Archives in Australia, Melbourne; also in the press in Poland (polonica) and Polish community abroad press Nowy Dziennik, NY, USA. Many years in the service of Polish community. Longterm advocate for the Polish community.

Member of Ethnic Public Broadcasting Association of Victoria, 1997- ; Kosciuszko Society Incorporated, Melbourne, 2006- ; Kosciuszko Heritage Inc., Sydney, 2007- ; Polish Political Prisoners Association in Australia 2010- . Freelance columnist. Resided in Melbourne 1978-2022. Died 9 March 2022 in Melbourne.
