| Dear Ernestyna. What a marvellous treat to be with you and to honour the Polish contribution to our High Country and national history! It was particularly poignant too as we were able to turn our thoughts to the terrible humanitarian crisis in the Ukraine and to the work the Polish people are doing to alleviate the suffering of so many Ukrainian citizens. After the fires and during the Covid pandemic nothing could be more important than to remind us of our heritage of which Strzelecki’s story is such an important and inspiring part. Societies always need explorers who push the boundaries of human knowledge at the same time as being a true humanitarian. We continue to need those who push the boundaries into the unknown and we need our humanitarians more than ever. The Polish people set such wonderful example to the world.
It is so important in times like this to remember the contribution of those who made Australia their home after the devastation of the Second World War. I think those times are being forgotten and yet it is one of the most formative phases in our recent Australian history. Australia was always a multi cultural society but the Europeans who came here in the 1950s showed us how to grow and develop in a way that had never happened before. Those people are now the backbone of our nation.
