| Nastassia Chrysantos: The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party is facing internal ructions ahead of the March state election after MPs asked their leader Robert Borsak to resign or risk jeopardizing the regional party’s chances at next year’s poll.The unanimous request from party MPs, Orange MP Philip Donato, Barwon MP Roy Butler and upper house MP Mark Banasiak, came after Borsak made comments saying a female MP should have been “clocked” during a fiery parliamentary debate in September.
Donato said Borsak’s remark, directed towards independent MP Helen Dalton, was the final straw in a series of internal issues between the MP and party leader.They approached Borsak on November 8, asking him to resign from his 12-year career in parliament and not contest the next election as an upper house MP. We (raised with him) that we were concerned about the party's reputation and brand, induced by this comment, Donato said.
Even if it was an off-the-cuff comment…it was inappropriate and we should be setting an example. [This] shouldn’t be tolerated in any workplace, let alone parliament. He did not see it as being a problem, which I think goes to show his detachment with a lot of issues… He still has not…apologized.
Dalton, the independent member for Murray, left the Shooters in March this year bu she supported the call for Borsak to leave parliament and for cultural change on Macquarie Street. - I think parliament needs to change, Dalton said. If [people] are not willing to change, then they need to move on.
