Dr Kazimierz Stanislaw Kozlowski. The degree of Doctor of Medicine (honoris causa) was conferred upon Dr Kazimierz Stanislaw Kozlowski at the ceremony held at 2.00pm on 21 December 1995.
Citation.Presented by the Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor D McNicol Chancellor.
I have the honour to present Dr Kazimierz Stanislaw Kozlowski for admission to the degree of Doctor of Medicine (honoris causa).Dr Kozlowski entered medical school in Poznan soon after World War II and graduated in 1952. In 1971 Dr Kozlowski took up a position as Staff Radiologist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children. At appointment he had an established reputation in Europe and North America for his publications in the area of children's radiology. In particular he had taken an interest in bone dysplasias i.e. disorders of growth of bones, and had described the radiographic features which were characteristic of these disorders.

His book, in 1972, with Dr Rupprecht, was the first of its kind 00 osteochondrodysplasias. Bone dysplasias, apart from causing short stature, are among the most crippling disorders of childhood, leading to family distress and social stigmatisation. Paediatric radiology is paramount in the diagnosis of bone dysplasias as X-rays can probe the child without hurting, and an expert diagnostic radiologist can make the correct diagnosis from the X-ray films without needles. This is a very important consideration when the patient is a little child. Our University and The Children's Hospital have received significant academic standing in the field of academic paediatric radiology because of his efforts.

He has co-authored over 300 papers from many countries, publishing in Polish, German, French, Spanish and Italian as well as his adopted language, English. Dr Kozlowski's interests have not only focused on the skeleton in bone dysplasias but he is also an authority on bone tumours and particularly tumours of the jaw in children and adults. He is quoted at least 22 times in McKusick's standard work Mendelian Inheritance in Man.

There can be little doubt that he is the best known Australian radiologist overseas.

Dr Kozlowski has contributed greatly towards making the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, a teaching hospital of the University of Sydney, a centre of clinical excellence. At the end of 1994 he stood down as Senior Staff Specialist in the Department of Paediatric Radiology at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children but has continued his interest and consultation with hardly less enthusiasm than when he joined the staff.

Chancellor, I have the honour to present Dr Kazimierz Stanislaw Kozlowski for admission to the degree of Doctor of Medicine (honoris causa).
