Rally for the name of Kosciuszko
Ursula Lang

Did you know that the core idea of the Mound and Mount Kosciuszko Festival was to make possible the participation of the wider Polish community including businesses, musicians and performing artists (especially Dance Ensembles), in Canberra, Wollongong, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

The organizers wanted to show off our rich Polish culture to the local communities of Jindabyne and Cooma, to the political decision makers, and to the wider Media, and to show them that we, the Polish Community of Australia, values highly the contribution made by Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki to Australian exploration.

We wanted Australians to know that the values for which General Tadeusz Kosciuszko stood, are so important, that the name of Mount Kosciuszko, given as a tribute to the General by Strzelecki, should NEVER be changed. We want it to be embraced by everyone in Australia, as it is by the Poles.

Part 1 of the Project, “Kosciuszko, Music on the Mountain”, was an amazing achievement and has been acknowledged by all as a great success. However, due to logistics, only a relatively small number of people could be involved.

But now, with the Mound and Mount Festival looming close on the horizon on the 28th and 29th April 2007, the organizers need the support of the artists and dancing groups to achieve the goals of this second special event. The response so far, I’m reticent to say, has NOT met expectations.

And so, I would like to ask you all again, on behalf of the organizers, to consider the invitation carefully, and to try and appreciate the importance of the Mound and Mount Festival, and what it hopes to achieve.

The organizers can’t guarantee the success of the Festival on their own – THEY REALLY NEED YOUR SUPPORT AND HELP.

How can you help?

• Businesses - Take up a stall, offer a donation or sponsorship to help with the significant costs of staging the Festival and its associated exhibitions;

• Artists, musicians and dance ensembles – work out your repertoire and join The Sydney Windjammers, John Hospodaryk, Adam Wasiel, Halina Gad, Olivia Kierdal, Alicia Polak, Syrenka, and Lajkonik, from Sydney, and Slawek Kazan from Canberra;

• Everyone else – book your Jindabyne accommodation and be there to support the cause!

If we all work together, we can make it a great and successful weekend.
