The festival is held across 4 prominent venues in the city: State Theatre, Dendy Opera Quays, Greater Union George Street Cinemas and Metro Theatre.
Single session tickets are from $14.00 (concession) to $16.50 (adult). For real cinema lovers there are various types of flexi passes available.
The Sydney Film Festival is, without a doubt, one of the major cultural and social events in the city. It is also one of the world's longest running film festivals – it was established in 1954! The festival's patrons include mega Australian stars, such as: Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill, and directors like Baz Luhrmann.
This years’ festival offers a broad collection of the latest movies and classics from over 50 countries. It will take you on a culturally and emotionally inspiring journey to every corner of the world with its broad selection of fiction, documentary, short stories and animation.
Polish audiences may be disappointed that none of the latest Polish productions has been selected for this year’s festival. It goes to show that contemporary Polish cinema is in financial and artistic crisis. It is clearly under resourced to break to the international film scene with its major projects.
In terms of film ideas, it seems to be trapped between a desire to imitate Hollywood style, blockbuster action movies and ambitious attempts at recreating the sensitivity of acclaimed Polish directors like Kieslowski, Wajda or Holland. As a consolation, it is worth mentioning that Kieslowski’s short documentary from 1977, NIGHT PORTER’S POINT OF VIEW, is the most significant Polish contribution to this coming Sydney Film Festival. Together with short an American/Polish/French co-production of David Lynch, it is the only Polish film to be screened this year.
But the Sydney Film Festival is not just about watching movies. It is also about discussing them over a glass of nice, red wine in an ambient, smoky festival bar! It is a truly enjoyable 17 days of screenings, red carpet events, shows, gigs, debates and forums.
Don’t miss it! Enjoy this year’s Sydney Film Festival!
