Born in Poland, Renata Buziak moved to Australia in 1991. Renata has retained a passionate enthusiasm for art since childhood, initially inspired by the wonders of the photographic medium through her sister Iwona, who was studying fine arts in Poland and is a practising artist in Canada.
Renata vividly recalls those youthful years conducting magical experiments in Iwona’s darkroom, and marvelling as the images miraculously appeared. As a teenager, Renata began her photographic studies while living in Poland, and, while gaining work experience began to gradually evolve her own ideas regarding her art practice.
Photo by Charlotte Best | In 2006 Renata completed her Bachelor of Photography with Honours at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, Brisbane and is a member of the Queensland Centre for Photography management board. Renata’s photography evokes a spirit that transcends what is seen with the eye alone.
Her photographic projects include the ‘Gardens’ series of photo montages of Australian and Canadian landscapes; imaginary gardens that promote a composite, ‘dreamlike’ view of Renata’s artistic vision of the two countries, and confirming the artist’s affinity and intimacy with the natural world. The ‘Mirror Series’ presents - a ‘self-examination in an environmental context’.
Renata’s interest in the human form prompted the ‘Bodyscapes’ project, involving obscure close ups of the human body - also initially inspired by Iwona’s life drawings and sculpture. Other projects have included aerial photography – ‘airscapes’, and macrophotography. Her current projects focus on the process of organic decomposition and its effect on photographic materials.
This ‘biochrome’ process is a novel method for producing images from proprietary chromagenic print media through biological and chemical decomposition. The resultant images, while aesthetically pleasing, reflect natural environmental processes and their significance in life cycle. In 2006 during a residency at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens in Brisbane, Renata created a series of biochrome images focusing on Australian native plants.
