Spring Film Festivals not to Miss
Magda Kopydłowska
September and October is a great time for cinema lovers in Sydney. There are plenty of film festivals to choose from and here are just some of the suggestions.

The Goethe-Institut in cooperation with the German Consulate-General, the University of Sydney, and the City of Sydney have just launched German arts festival, GerMANY faces. It started on 10 September and will finish on 20 October 2007

The festival is showing contemporary German cinema, including classics like Run Lola Run - Lola rennt (Wed 19 September, 6.30pm), Wings of Desire - Der Himmel über Berlin (Wed 26 September, 6.30pm) and Good Bye, Lenin! (Wed 03 October, 6.30pm).

The rich program also offers world movie nights and films from German Cinema of 1945 – 1960. The screenings are held at Chauvel Cinema, Oxford and Oatley Street, Paddington from Wed 19 September - Wed 17 October. Single session ticket is $ 10 / $ 9, double session: $ 15 / $14.

Apart from the good cinema, the festival boasts fantastic art exhibitions, concerts & competitions and much much more. For more details, please visit:

The 8th edition of the Lavazza Italian Film festival, which starts on Sept 26th in Sydney, is another event a true movie lover cannot miss out on.

The opening night movie, The Manual of Love part two looks particularly promising. If anyone has seen the first part of this endearing bundle of love stories in a truly delectable Italian style, I’m sure you would be rushing to see its sequel. This loosely connected narrative shows the intricate ways love intervenes in our lives; a blissful starting point of the relationship, or its bitter end when it comes to a betrayal and abandonment. Fantastic, sometimes spicy acting, especially the sexy Monica Bellucci in the second part, is an additional highlight.

The 16 festival movies will be screened in two venues: Palace Norton Street at 99 Norton Street and Leichhardt and Palace Academy Twin at 3a Oxford Street in Paddington. General admission is $16 and there are multiple film passes available.

Finally, from 19th - 21st October 2007 Chauvel Cinema in Paddington will host a short non-European film event, Sydney African Film Festival.

The Sydney African Film Festival aims to promote cultural diversity and awareness of African Culture and community in Australia. It gives a rare chance to see movies of independent filmmakers and other creative arts from the African region.

The festival also supports the involvement in humanitarian help. It is organised by a group of volunteers to raise funds for Hands of Help - a grass roots charity working in Africa.

Ticket Prices are Adult - $30 opening night, and $18 for other sessions and concession - $30 opening night and $15 for other sessions. For more details visit:
