In part two of her special interview for Puls Polonii, Ewa Losinski shares more of her experiences from the the 2005 World Youth Day (WYD) in Cologne, Germany and reflects upon the 2008 WYD to be held in Sydney. Part One can be read here.
Will you be attending Sydney’s WYD yourself?
Yes, I will be attending WYD Sydney – I wouldn’t miss it!
The Late John Paul II visited Australia in 1986, already more than two decades ago. Do you feel that the visit of Pope Bendict XVI will re-invigorate Australian Catholics?
His Holiness, Benedict XVI, addresses young people in Cologne, Germany. Photo: vatican.va | Definitely! The magnitude of the event will astonish other people too – not just Catholics. It is a Catholic event; however, all people are invited to join in our celebrations. For Catholics, it is a privilege to be in the presence of the Holy Father – the leader of our Church – and in the presence of so many other Catholics. It will be encouraging and inspiring for all Catholics, especially Australians.
Young people always responded especially warmly to the Late John Paul II. In addition to the very fact that WYD was established by John Paul II himself, the defining call of this affinity was marked by catchphrases such as “JP Two, We love you” to which His Holiness would respond “JP Two, HE loves you!” Do you think Pope Benedict XVI will draw the young with such magnetism?
Catholics have so much respect and love for the Holy Father – especially the youth. John Paul II was young at heart – a truly captivating and revolutionary man. Pope Benedict XVI is a Holy man, who was elected for a purpose. Catholics love the church – so they will always love the Pope, as he is a true follower of Jesus. I think there will always be a great amount of enthusiasm with regard to the Pope, particularly from charismatic youth.
For young Catholic Poles living in Australia, and even for non-Polish youth of Polish parents, what do you think such a visit will represent for them?
Polish youth in Australia may come to a realisation that many other Australians will – people all around the world live in the Hope and Love of Jesus Christ! Polish people in particular, may miss being surrounded by Catholic people with common customs and traditions. Seeing others being enthused and joyous in their Faith is undoubtedly encouraging and a blessing in itself.
A WYD has never before been held in Australia. Do you expect anything special, or unique to take place?
I don’t think Australia has seen a gathering of Catholic youth like this before. It will be a unique experience for all Australians to see the enthusiasm and passion these people have for Life.
30,000 Poles in Cologne. Photo: Ewa Losinski. | The theme for the World Youth Day in Sydney is: 'You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses.' Acts 1:8.
The previous Theme in Cologne was – ‘Do not be afraid’. It turns out that this held a lot of meaning for me, and people I know. Next year’s theme is a beautiful one and I can’t wait to hear some incredible experiences!
If you could give the participants of the 2008 Sydney WYD one piece of advice, gleaned from your own experiences, what would it be?
To get the most out of the experience, go with a group and be open – don’t be afraid to ask questions. Bring lots of souvenirs to exchange with people from other countries…don’t forget to bring pens and paper - you are going to meet lots of people that you will want to keep in contact with!
