(March 15th) AUSTRALIA's main union body says the federal government shouldn't import migrant workers to solve labour shortages without investing money into training.
The government is considering increasing the number of skilled migrants to AUSTRALIA to combat the shortage of workers, particularly in the trades.
The A-C-T-U president (ms) SHARAN BURROW says the union accepts migrant workers might be a short-term solution.
But she says the federal government should also boost funding for training apprentices at TAFE colleges and schools.
Ms BURROW has also called for a skills summit to be held in April to work out the best solutions to the labour shortage problem.
