Polish actor-turned-auteur Skolimowski made films from 1960, but he’s best remembered for Deep End (1971), The Shout (SFF78) and Moonlighting (1982). Now, two decades after retiring to paint and write poetry, Skolimowski returns to form with the startling Four Nights with Anna, based on a story discovered by chance.
It’s the portrait of a lonely, deeply disturbed crematorium attendant in a decrepit Polish village who mixes sedatives into the sugar of a nurse in the adjoining hospital, then visits her at night to express his love by tidying, sewing buttons, painting her toenails and, inevitably, with flowers and an engagement ring. Mordantly funny and almost unbearably tense, this is Skolimowski at his provocative best.
