interview with performer Sam Davison

Melbourne performer, director, deviser Sam Davison tells Ernestyna Skurjat-Kozek about his fascination with the great Polish atronomer, 6 weeks stay in Poland, doing research and writing a play, and now preparing a great show in Melbourne Planetarium on the occassion of the International Year of Astronomy.

Forensic reconstruction. Is it him?

Sam Davison is a performer, director, and teacher who has worked and trained across various mediums including theatre, film, TV, opera and street performance.

Originally trained as an actor at the QUT Academy of the Arts (Graduated 1993), Sam worked as a freelance artist in Sydney and Melbourne before undertaking three years study with the Ecole de Mime Corporel Dramatique in London in 2000.

More recently Sam has re-established himself in Melbourne where he works as a teacher and performer, having led workshops for students of all ages from primary schools to industry professionals. This includes ongoing work with the Victorian Arts Centre, The National Theatre Ballet School, The Melbourne College of Advanced Education, and the QUT Creative Industries Faculty.

Recently Sam established Transit Theatre as a vehicle for creating work, and as a performer he continues to produce work for various groups and solo performance, including producing and performing A Complete Theory of Time in Europe and South Korea (Transit, 2008), Pigeonhole in Melbourne (Polyglot TAP residency, 2009), and The Man Who Saw Things That Weren’t There in Melbourne (Vic Arts Centre, 2007).

Other notable work includes Chookas ’08 & ’07 (Vic Arts Centre) Shoosh (Glynn Nicholas Productions, 2005) and a European tour of The Government Inspector (Theatre de l’Ange Fou, 2003)

Directing credits include: Biloxi Blues, Amadeus, Total Eclipse, i Pagliacci (Opera on the Move), The Grimm Tales, and The Barber, The Banker & The Billionaire. Writing credits include: The Grimm Tales, The Man Who Saw Things That Weren’t There, and The Barber, The Banker, and the Billionaire.
