Snowy Scheme Opening Ceremony Re-Enactment
Adaminaby - 60 years on...
Come and see the Re-Enactment! On the October 17, 1949, the Official Opening of the Snowy Scheme the took place near Adaminaby (now under water). A host of dignitaries attended this significant event. They included the Governor General Sir William McKell and the Prime Minister Ben Chifley. After considerable research, an audio disk with the speeches was found at the National Film and Sound Archives. The photos of the day were located at the National Archives. The Adaminaby community is organising a re-enactment event with military precision.

The cast of dignitaries will be students from the Adaminaby Primary School.Samantha Armytage, a well known TV presenter and former Adaminaby pupil, will be presenting the visiting dignitaries, students, as they arrive. They will arrive in some of the vehicles used during the original event. They will perform the opening cenermony on a stage in the town square of Adaminaby. Everyone attending the 60th Reunion is invited to attend. We are expecting a large turnout. The speeches have been shortened for the actors, but will cover all pertinent points relating to the scheme.

We hope, with the expected media coverage, it will reinforce the significance of the Scheme in the history of Australia.

The Snowy Scheme has a story to tell like no other in Australian history. It was a project of its time, set on a grand scale, a perfect stage on which our post-war migrant workforce could perform. It allowed the development of massive irrigation systems feeding off the Murray and the Murrumbidgee, and generated clean renewable energy to the Eastern States. It gave migrants from a devastated Europe, some with families, a fresh start, albeit often in the most demanding of conditions, and even set new standards for occupational health and safety.
