From the forefront of the contemporary international jazz scene comes Europe’s finest piano trio to tour Australia to be part of the Sydney and Perth Festivals, and to give concerts in Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne.
Marcin Wasilewski - piano * Slawomir Kurkiewicz - bass * Michal Miskiewicz – drums *
This exceptional piano trio honed their skills working with Poland's iconic trumpet star Tomasz Stanko but for some years now on the prestigious ECM record label have emerged in their own right on the forefront of the European jazz scene. Please inform the Polish community and ask them to support the tour and book their tickets and we see you there for an inspirig evening of jazz improvisation.
Marcin Wasilewski's feathery touch on piano, combined with slow transitions and subtle interaction between players Michal Miskiewicz (drums) and Slawomir Kurkiewicz (double-bass) creates a bewitching sound – balanced, complex and delicate. Indeed this Polish piano Trio is an intricately cohesive unit with real ensemble playing. Their eclectic repertoire includes music by Prince, Carla Bley, Björk, Gary Peacock, Tomasz Stanko, Ennio Morricone as well as original compositions by Wasilewski.
Formed in the early 1990s when Wasilewski and Kurkiewicz were 15-year old students, the trio was originally called the Simple Acoustic Trio. They won awards and released five albums on local independent labels before signing to the renowned ECM for their first international release in 2004. Their second ECM recording, January, was released in 2007.
Individually, members of the trio have also played with international improvisers including Jan Garbarek, Gianluigi Trovesi, John Surman, Louis Sclavis, Arthur Blythe, Joe Lovano, Bernt Rosengren, Dino Saluzzi, Bobo Stenson, Anders Jormin, Manu Katche and Jon Christensen, and with leading exponents of Polish jazz such as Tomasz Szukalski, Piotr Wojtasik, Michal Urbaniak, Janusz Muniak and Zbigniew Namyslowski.
