SPK President's letter of protest
"the notorious Polish death camp"
We are hereby publishing yet another letter of protest sent to Mr Phil McLean, Editor in Chief of the Sydney Morning Herald. On behalf of the Polish Ex-Servicemen’s Association in Australia, I must lodge a protest against your paper’s usage of reckless terminology. In the TV Guide of the Sydney Morning Herald of 25th November 2009, on page 10, Michael Idato reviewing the ABC2 screening of “Inside Hana's Suitcase” used the expression "the notorious Polish death camp Auschwitz".

The Auschwitz Memorial/Museum website states the following: “It (Auschwitz) was established by the Nazis in 1940, in the suburbs of the city of Oswiecim which, like other parts of Poland, was occupied by the Germans during the Second World War. The name of the city of Oswiecim was changed to Auschwitz, by occupying Germans, which became the name of the camp as well".

Whether used deliberately or through ignorance, this description is not only highly misleading but also grossly offensive to Polish people. This statement is insulting to the good name of Poland, and especially to the Polish War Veterans, who fought against Germany in WW II, and does not do credit to your, otherwise esteemed, paper.
