Krystyna Cyron, President of the Polish Association Cabramatta has received the award of Fairfield City 2010 Citizen of the Year. The Fairfield City Council 2010 Australia Day brochure gives the following details about Krystyna: Krystyna Cyron has been a local volunteer since the early 1960s when she arrived in Australia from Poland as a 21 year old with her husband and child. Since then, she has had two more children, held down a full-time job and continued her volunteer work.
Her contributions as a volunteer are varied and include: • Acted as a "Pink lady" at a hospital (1960s-1970s) • Provided occasional support at the Ryde Mental Hospital (1980s) • Provided support to Polish migrants coming to Australia as part of Polish Solidarity Migration, visiting the Villawood and East Hills Migrant Hostels (1980s)[]
Since 1990, Krystyna has provided services and support to many Polish senior citizens as part of her role with the Polish Society of Christ. Her responsibilities include:
• Helping organise and prepare hot meals for seniors in a "Meals on Wheels" style program (between 70 -120 meals a week).
In addition to her volunteer work, Krystyna is very pro-active in the community and is a member of many groups including: • A member of Council's Multicultural Advisory Committee (9 years) • A member of the Fairfield District Seniors Network (7 years) • Initiated campaigns to send material support to Poland • President of the Polish Association • Represents the Cabramatta Polish Association to the National Polish Association in Canberra and Sydney • A member of the Community Liaison Group of the Southern Sydney Freight Line Project • Advocates on behalf of the community to consultations held by Fairfield City Council and other community groups.
The local Fairfield newspapers, namely, the Fairfield Advance and the Fairfield City Champion, reported her award as shown in the excerpts from these newspapers.
The Australia Day Awards were sponsored by Australia Post and stamps of Krystyna were issued with the Award. The Community congratulates Krystyna Cyron on her prestigious award.
