Interested in theatre? And in learning about how theatre can impact on the lives of youth? Then this book is for you!
The Story of Scena 98 is a unique read. This limited edition publication takes readers on a journey through the first 10 years of Scena 98, a Polish Youth Theatre group, based in Perth, Australia, as seen through the eyes of the director and participating youth. Performing such classics as Goethe’s Dr Faust, Shakespeare’s A Mid Summer Nights Dream, de Saint Exupery’s The Little Prince, as well as Polish classics such as Wyspianski’s The Wedding, Scena 98 has been called a “sociological phenomenon”.
Drawing together youth of various ages, Scena 98 has been integral in maintaining Polish cultural traditions in a multicultural Australia. This book explores how the arts can act to unite ethnic communities and help ethnic youth comes to terms with their cultural identities.
Scena 98, while based in Perth, has performed across Australia, including prestigious performances at the Polish Consulate in Sydney. Renowned actor Marta Kaczmarek (featured most recently in the Australian series The Circuit) has worked with the group for a number of years, running acting workshops as well as directing.
Two members, after taking part in Scena 98 subsequently went on to study at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in Perth and the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Melbourne.
