The Polish flag is a symbol which unites Poles of all generations, all over the world.
By hoisting the flag we show respect for all our Countrymen who devoted their lives, freedom, or work and talent to the existence, independence and success of our Nation and Poland, and we demonstrate our pride and joy being Polish, or having Polish roots. In view of the forthcoming national holidays:* 2nd May – Day of the Polish Flag and Day of Poles and Polish Communities Abroad,* 3rd May – National 3rd of May Holiday,we request you to put up the Polish flag on these days on your building, in your garden or on your car.
It is worth remembering that in the past many Poles risked repression for manifesting their attachment to the national symbols and colours (for instance after the Second World War celebrations of the Constitution of the 3rd of May were prohibited in Poland. The holiday was reinstated in the calendar of national holidays by a Parliament act of April 1990). In this context it is particularly important to appreciate that today each and every one of us is free to hoist the Polish national flag.
The poster attached to this e-mail encourages Poles to put up the Polish flag. We request you to print it out (in A3 or A4 format) and to put it up in the offices of your organization, the meeting place of the Polish community in your area, in your apartment block or place of work.
We also request you to forward the poster to the greatest possible number of Poles who are likely to support our action.
This year the celebrations of both national holidays will be marked by sorrow and mourning after the death in the plane crash near Smolensk of ninety six persons, who were flying to Russia to take part in the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Katyń massacre. Among the victims of this tragedy were President Lech Kaczyński and the First Lady, the last President of Poland in Emigration Mr Ryszard Kaczorowski, Members of Parliament, Senators, members of the government and other key national institutions, generals, officials of the President’s Office, representatives of the Katyń Families’ Associations and accompanying persons. We salute their memory.
