The very first memorial to Katyn was erected in September 1976, in Gunnersbury Cemetery, Chiswick, England. In a curious coincidence, when I returned home from my 2006 travels one of the very first recordings I listened to from the set I had bought of “Reagan In His Own Voice” was Ronald Reagan’s address about the opening of this memorial, just one of more than a thousand of his daily radio broadcasts he wrote and delivered between 1975 and 1980, just after he completed his second term as Governor of California, and just before he ran for the office of President of the United States.
I have marveled at this coincidence ever since. In this broadcast Reagan makes a number of mistakes, but these were mistakes that were prevalent in western literature of the time. The fact that Reagan was aware of the events and used his radio program to articulate the lessons is what is important.
