WITH their intricate costumes, distinct songs and traditional routines, Polish dance group Lajkonik has been entertaining audiences for more than 20 years. The ensemble celebrated its 20th anniversary at the Liverpool Catholic Club on Saturday in flamboyant style.
Henryk Snoch, president of the Liverpool organisation, said they were very proud of their history. “Lajkonik was established in 1990 by artistic director Urszula Lang and a group of parents passionate about Polish song and culture,” Mr Snoch said. “For the many new immigrants from Poland this was a way of giving back to the community for accepting them and making them feel so welcome.”
The group has brought cultural song and dance to more than 450 children and young adults. Today the troupe has a membership base of more than 60 performers in three age categories - with the youngest member just four years of age.
Lajkonik features regularly at multicultural festivals, weddings and special events, travelling frequently overseas and in Australia. “We take pride in our dancing, pride in the costumes and pride in our Polish heritage,” Mr Snoch said. “But you don’t have to have a Polish background or need to be an experienced dancer to join.”
