THE play "A Couple Of Poor, Polish-speaking Romanians" [by Dorota Maslowska] has been described as brilliant, hysterically funny and at times, disturbing. It was written by Dorota Maslowska, one of a new generation of Polish writers, and follows the journey of hitchhikers from hell, Dzina and Parcha. Dzina is a pregnant, glue-sniffing whacko, while Parcha is an intimidating, motor-mouthed hoon.
Together, the two drug-fuelled party goers pose as gypsies and lose themselves on a bizarre and intense journey through modern Poland. It is a humorous affair, but it is also a scathing critique of social class and national identity, where all is not as it first seems.

Epping local Sandy Velini plays the role of a bartender, a character she described as very strong minded. “She doesn’t suffer fools gladly,” Velini said. “The hitchhiking couple who are very happily drugged up have just left a party together and they’re coming down in a stupor and are trying to get home. “On their way they stop in at a diner where my character works.”
The pair have no money and try to use the phone, but the bartender won’t have a bar of it, seeing the couple as nothing more than a couple of drugged up junkies. “It’s very funny, because the drugged up young man is from a Polish television series and in such a terrible state that no-one recognises him,” Velini said. “He can’t believe he is not being recognised, even though the people in the diner are watching a television with his show on it.”
The production is currently on at the Newtown Theatre and will run until August 7.
