| WARSAW, Poland -- Poland's president and the U.S. ambassador have inaugurated a monument to Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a Pole who played a role in the American Revolution in the 18th century. The monument unveiled in Warsaw Tuesday by President Bronislaw Komorowski and U.S. Ambassador Lee Feinstein is a replica of one inaugurated in 1910 in Washington's Lafayette Park - designed by Polish sculptor Antoni Popiel.
Kosciuszko (Kosh-CHOOSH'ko) was born in 1746 to Polish nobility in what is now Belarus. He underwent extensive military training across Europe before later fighting in the American Revolution and campaigning against slavery.
He is also credited with helping design West Point, which became Gen. George Washington's headquarters in 1779 and is now the Army's military academy.
